Happy New Year to all!

2012 brings lots of exciting things for me, a big overseas trip in April to marry the love of my life in his home country, I'm becoming an aunty once again to my sister's first baby in March and a few other exciting plans that I have up my sleeve that I'll tell you about later down the track.

Bring on 2012 already I say!

Single Origin Roasters

I've recently finished working with amazing Sydney based coffee company Single Origin Roasters (how rad is their website?!) on some t-shirt designs. The production of the tees (and the design of the dead head moths on the roaster tee) was looked after by Bri and Andrew from Secret Squirrel Clothing Label.
Single Origin and Secret Squirrel were great to work with on this project. A big thanks to Emma for asking me to be involved!

Signed & Numbered Gallery

This is a little collection I've just completed to be sold as limited edition Giclee prints through Signed and Numbered Gallery in Prahran, Melbourne. The original artworks were created using collage, pen and ink. I'm so excited to have my prints amongst some amazing artists like Kelly Smith, Jordan Clarke, Catherine Campbell and Rik Lee! I know. Wowzers.

I get my illustrations made into high quality giclee prints. I always go to Lantern printing in Middle Park for my giclee printing. The prints always come out crisp and professional and as detailed as the original artwork.

Browtician Website

These are some images of the new Browtician website. I recently created some diagrams to be used in the tips and tricks section of the website. The website showcases 'the fine line of tweezers and brow tools' from Browtician. As part of my research for the illustrations, I of course had to try out the products....and they are no ordinary tweezers. Seriously professional brows on this illustrator.

Have you heard there's a new issue of Spook mag out? It's a pretty fab issue too. I was lucky enough to illustrate two of the articles in this issue. One of the articles was about Jesse Friedman, the other about the Amish rite of passage called Rumspringa. It's always an interesting (and slightly disturbing) topic when working with Spook. I love it.

Craft Hatched

Thanks to everyone who came on Saturday to £1000 bend in Melbourne for the Craft Hatch jumbo market.
I had giclee prints of my illustrations on sale, along with a new range of stationery under the name DearSister, my new collaboration with my sister, Shelly Campton.

It was a fantastic day. The atmosphere was buzzing. £1000 bend was the perfect location for the market, organised by Craft Victoria. On a recent trip to the hardware store, I had paint on my mind.
On the way I found some amazing texture and colour on an old house that was weathered and graffitied. I stumbled upon a brightly coloured brick wall that reminded me of a wall I photographed in Burano, Italy in 2006.

Ride On Magazine

In recent months I've been working on some black and white line drawings for Ride On Magazine. Ride On is a great mag for cyclists, released by Bicycle Victoria. It has been interesting working on these illustrations as they required clean, simple linework as many were being used for diagrams.
The best part about being an illustrator is that no two jobs are the same. I always learn something new. I love trying new subject matter and creating illustrations for different purposes.

Illustrators Australia for Japan Auction

Illustrators Australia and Illustrator Andrea Innocent have organised an online auction of artwork to raise funds for the Japan and Pacific Disaster Appeal 2011. Read more from Andrea below.

"On March 11, 2011 an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 struck close to the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan. This earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed 9,737 people, 2,766 injured, and 16,501 people missing across eighteen prefectures, as well as over 125,000 buildings damaged or destroyed. Thousands are still homeless and living in makeshift evacuation shelters in freezing conditions, without power and limited supplies.
The morning of this event, as coincidence would have it, I had spent three hours in my studio sorting through my collection of ‘Japanese stuff’ which included flyers, cards, photos, toys, etc, every time I turned a page or looked at another photo I was reminded of the three years I had lived there and the myriad of wonderful and amazing people I had met.
My own illustration career was inspired and nurtured by the country of Japan and it’s people, it’s culture will always be present in my work in some form and I will always feel a great debt to what Japan has given me, and continues to give to me, as an illustrator and artist.
By the time the earthquake struck I felt like I was there again myself and as I watched the disaster unfold over the weekend I felt an indescribable sadness and fear, my younger brother and his girlfriend live in Tokyo along with many of my Japanese friends, as well as helplessness at my inability to do anything to make it better for all those involved.
By Sunday I had decided I would stage an online auction of my prints on my website. It was shortly after this I received a call from Jody Pratt from IA expressing a desire to help in some way herself. It was from these feelings that the IA for JP online auction of members works was created. I was overwhelmed and overjoyed at the rapid response from members and would like to thank you all for your very kind donations. A Wedding in Italy

A few weeks back I was commissioned to create some customised, illustrated wedding invitations for a super lovely couple who are getting married in a gorgeous castle in Italy. I know, how special is that?!

BSG Drawn Exhibition

Well it's been a little quiet around the old blog lately. Which only means one thing. I've been busy at my drawing table. Which is great! I have lots of fun things to share with over the next few posts.

A day spent at home in the studio just screen printing whatever I felt like. Feels good. Hope to do this at least one day a week this year. Reminding me that it's all about the process.
Ps. Note to self: Kittens and screen printing don't mix......let's say it got a little messy.

Enrique El Tigre

A quick post to introduce the new baby in our house, Enrique El Tigre. I'm sure he will influence many future illustrations. We've been wanting to adopt a kitten for a long time. As an illustrator you spend a lot of time working at home by yourself. It's great to have a fluffy companion to keep me company whilst I work towards deadlines. (Does that make me sound like a crazy cat lady already?) Although he may be an even better procrastination tool than Twitter!

Siamese twins

Happy New Year friends!
I've spent the first few days of the new year brainstorming and working on some ideas for a collection of images that may be part of an exhibition that I've been invited to take part in this year. I've decided to use the theme 'Vintage Circus' as inspiration. I've been wanting to play around with this theme for a while.
The first I'd like to share with you is this image called 'Siamese twins.' I'll give you sneak peeks of some of the images as I go. I'm hoping to create some repeat pattern illustrations as well as simple illustrations such as this one, that hopefully will work well as a collection and separately. Hope you like the progress so far.

Feliz Navidad

Hope you had a splendid Christmas!
Although everything gets a little crazy around this time, isn't it a great excuse to take some time out to spend with family and eat and drink way too much? Heck yes!

I was lucky enough to spend a few days down at Wilsons Promontory. We saw Emus, Wombats, an Echidna, and super cute Blue Wrens- all in the wild. How special.

Craft Hatched!

Yesterday was the final Craft Hatch market for the year. I was lucky enough to have my first ever market stall there at the city library.

It was a success! I am definitely going to try and have more market stalls in the future. It's super fun chatting to people about art and craft all day. Thanks to all those who came to support a handmade Christmas. Hope everyone that bought an art print loves it. I was lucky enough to have lots of my lovely friends and family come along for support, they ended up buying lots of goodies from all the great stalls that were there. Thanks for the support everyone!xxx

Mini chalkboards

I've been making mini chalkboards for signage for my market stalls. They are super easy to whip up. I bought a collection of second hand frames from opshops (for around $1 each). Removed the glass, cleaned them up, painted them white.

Then I cut pieces of box board the appropriate size for each frame. I painted these with chalkboard paint (available from most hardware stores or even online).
Then I popped the back of the frame back in. and 'voila!'..a mini chalkboard.
Wouldn't this be a cute gift idea for christmas? For someone's kitchen or a little one's bedroom. Cute as pie.
I'm going to make a larger one for above my drawing table for my daily to do list. Much more inspiring than a piece of notepaper taped to the wall.


This is a reference for all those Anchorman fans out there.

There's a chair in there

In some non illustration (but rather creative) related news. My sister bought this set of six teak chairs from ebay on an impulse purchase. They are gorgeous but she was worried they need quite a bit of work. So I offered to help her reupholster, sand and oil/varnish them. I love a project!! And in return I can keep the two with armrests (pictured above)

I've been keen on the idea of learning reupholstery for a while and would love to learn how to do it professionally. But for this project I'm going to do a simple recovering.

So yesterday, we spent the day running around Bunnings looking for replacement screws and tools and then back at my place removing old screws and upholstery fabric...

Well this week has been all about planning some fun new projects and collaborations for next year and ideas churning through my head about exhibitions and markets.
Yesterday I went to the Learn to Screen Print studio to print some Tea Towels for upcoming markets. Laura from Learn to Screen Print and I did a collaborative design for the tea towels to sell at upcoming markets. She will be at Maribyrnong Makers Market this Sat the 20th of Nov and I'll be at Craft Hatch at the city library on Dec 11th.

We printed the tea towels in a lovely smokey pinkyish/purple and another version in duck egg blue : )
It was a beautifully sunny day in Melbourne yesterday so we could hang the printed tea towels on the washing line to dry. How sweet.

A Teeny Etsy Update and Some Work in Progress

It is a seriously nice Melbourne day today and I've been inside playing with paint and putting an update on my etsy shop. I still only have a few items there, but I should be updating it with lots of new goodies in the near future. I made the above Screen Prints (with hand drawn ink work) earlier in the week. They are now up on my Etsy store for the bargain price of $45 each! What a steal.. I'm toying with some new themes and having fun with getting messy with paint again.

Ps The Bottle Brush flowers in the top photo and below are from a tree outside my house. They are blooming all over the neighbourhood at the moment. Gorgeous.

Melbourne Museum of Printing

Yesterday I went on an adventure to Footscray to the Melbourne Museum of Printing with Laura Day from Learn2ScreenPrint and artist Marija Basic. If you are interested in all things print / typography / graphic design and are in Melbourne, I highly recommend popping in. Our lovely guide Michael Isaachsen (founder and director) was very generous in giving us a rundown on the (fully functional) equipment in the museum and a brief overview on the history of typesetting.

This place is heaven for anyone who loves old machinery. When being used the moving parts resemble scenes from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory or Santa's Workshop.
We had our names made into slugs to take home, in the typeface of our choosing. We were like little kids rummaging through all the drawers full of typographic goodies.

"Unfortunately, unlike most other such museums, it has to pay rent for its premises and receives no assistance from government or industry towards these costs. The Museum was closed from 1998 to 2003 and had no revenue but still had to pay the storage and transport costs.
There is a substantial shortfall in revenue since the closure and reopening, and this is being made up by a small number of dedicated individuals borrowing (probably more than they can afford) to prevent loss of the collection".(from the MMOP website)

So how can you help keep this place operating? Go and visit, take one of their workshops on how to use the equipment and then utilise this fantastic resource for artists and designers alike.
Please note that the MMOP has moved to 133 Cowper St, Footscray not as it says on the unofficial website here. (But this site is worth having a look at for the photos of museum activity.)

Ch Ch Changes

This week has been a big week of change and a mountain load of paperwork. I've recently decided to jump into some changes in my life to lead the most creatively satisfying existence that I can.
So change is always a little stressful, but the best kind of change is that which you are afraid of and excited about all at once. (So I read somewhere this week, I hope they are right!)

To help me deal with all this I've found solace in making stuff! I've been designing and hand screen printing some gift cards (some designs above) ready for Craft Hatch Market and my etsy store.

I've also been working on a private commission, I've included a little sneak peek below.

RIP Notebook Magazine

A few weeks ago I was very happy to get a call from notebook magazine asking me to do an illustration (above) for their December issue, to accompany an article about online shopping.

Notebook magazine is one of those publications with a gorgeous aesthetic. They use great illustrators, and pay appropriately (which doesn't always happen in editorial illustration). So I was very flattered and excited to be asked to do this illustration.

However, it was very sad to hear last week that Notebook will be discontinued, with the November issue the last to be printed. Unfortunately my illustration won't go to print, so I decided to share it with you now.

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Art Director, Kristy on this illustration and I hope that the future brings lots of wonderful new projects to her and the other members of the notebook team.

I've been riding around the bayside area in the last few days gathering supplies to set up a little home screen printing studio. I want to make some art prints and gift cards to sell on etsy at markets. Hopefully this will happen in time for christmas shopping! Stay tuned.

In between setting up my studio and working on commissioned illustrations I've also been having some fun in the warm springtime days we've been having in Melbourne. How rad to have two grand final weekends in a row! I'm not at all a follower of the AFL, but I do love how Melburnians celebrate together. Last week we went to watch the game at St Kilda bowls club and I noticed this dashing fellow adorning the wall. Really how fantastic? I want it for my living room.

Feast or Famine

Well it's been a very busy month so far, with the Frugavore book release, a trip to Sydney to see some fantastic new clients about an exciting project (more on that in the near future), a talk at my old college (Enmore Design Centre) with existing 2nd year students...new job and project offers on the horizon, house guests, and very little sleep! So I haven't had much time to post new illustrations. But here is a little pic, from a few weeks back, of one of the characters who live in my lovely street who pass by my window in front of my drawing table. Speaking of the drawing table, I should get back there now....

Frugavore - Officially in a bookstore near you!

Very excited to share that recently I had the pleasure to create some yummy illustrations for a lovely new book called 'Frugavore' written by Arabella Forge and published by Black Inc. Publishing. The book is about cooking and eating beautiful, sustainable and healthy food whilst endeavouring to spend little and waste even less.

The book includes lots of very handy information and ultra yummy recipes like Sweet Potato Hummus (YUM) and Lemon Curd Cheese (Can't wait to try that one).

Print Print Screen Screen

Last Saturday I went to class at Learn to Screen Print with Laura Day in Melbourne. I've been wanting to learn to screen print for years and have always felt drawn to print making even though it isn't an area I've pursued as much as I would like...until now that is.
The lesson was incredibly fun and well structured. Laura makes you feel relaxed as soon as you walk in the studio door. We learned the basics of paper printing (onto cards) and fabric (onto a tote bag supplied by Laura). Check out her website and blog for more info.
I'm so inspired and am currently working my way into setting up a little studio for screen printing at home so I can start to use this technique in my illustration practice. A screen printing monster has been awakened within me...and I don't want to tame it!

A fabulous new retail art gallery called Sweets Workshop opened last weekend in Summer Hill, Sydney. It's a gorgeous space stocking 'decorative objects and giftware produced by local and international designers and artists.'
I was asked by the lovely owners to stock some of my artworks as giclee prints for sale in store, It is most exciting, especially because a few have already sold! Yay. I'll post some photos of my work in Sweets Workshop soon.

Melbourne Street Fashion and an Art Exchange, oh my!

It's been a long time between posts! I've been uber busy working on some very exciting projects that I will be able to share with you shortly...
This week I was lucky enough to be asked by the lovely Phoebe Montague at Melbourne Street Fashion to be a featured artist on their wonderful website. Have a little wonder over there for a read.
For this post I want to share some artwork from some other very talented artists. I was invited by a good friend of mine to be involved in a little art exchange which involved sending an artwork to a friend of hers and an email to six of my friends and in return you receive up to 36 artworks in the mail from their friends! Blogging Inspiration - Table Tonic

This week I've created an illustration inspired by the fabulous blog Table Tonic. Created by Louise Bell, former Creative Director of Cleo, Cosmopolitan, and Dolly Magazine. The blog is one aspect of her online furnishings store, in her words "At Table Tonic, we aim to differentiate our boutique through a heavy focus on well priced, hand crafted homewares and textiles, both new and vintage, most of which are not readily available to the Australian market. Until now!"
My illustration is based on some of my own furiture in a composition inspired by the colour combinations and gorgeous hand crafted items and homes showcased on the blog and in the online store.

This weeks Blogging Inspiration image comes courtesy of the Japanese Blog from Cat Cafe Neko No Mise. Ok, so I do admit, I'm not a follower of the blog...as I can't read Japanese. Rather, this image was inspired by a recent article that I read in Vice magazine. The article tells of a newish trend in Japan of Cat Cafes. Customers pay around $9 per hour to sip tea and hang out with the resident brood of cats. I love this idea. Can someone please open one in Melbourne?

Miss Literary Minded

Today brings the second installment of my illustrations created by me inspired by a Blog that I love. This week I chose to create an image inspired by the blog 'Literary Minded'.
The author of this blog is Angela Meyer a 'Gen Y, writer, reviewer and editor' and also one of my closest friends. Angela regularly updates on books she is or has been reading and her experience as an emerging writer herself. Her posts are insightful, personal and witty and an easy to swallow education for those of us who may be better with pictures than words!
Angela is one of the busiest people I know, I honestly don't see where she actually finds the time to sleep. In this image I wanted to portray the feeling that it seems sometimes that there may be more than one Angela sharing all the reading, writing, reviewing, writers festival attending, socialising........you get the picture. Enjoy.

Copenhagen Cycle Chic

Last year I created an illustration of the Lovely Lady Melbourne. I had a lot of fun with this and received some great feedback. In response I've decided to create a new illustration each fortnight inspired by a different blog.

This is a new illustration inspired by the blog Copenhagen Cycle Chic which features gorgeous photography of the stylish Copenhageners on their favourite form of transport. I fell in love with bicycle friendly Copenhagen when I visited a friend there a few years ago. The streets are wide enough to have safe bicycle lanes and the cyclists always look impeccably dressed....often even in heels. When I moved to Melbourne one year ago I was as impressed by the bike friendliness of the city and the increasing interest in bicycle chic (Even if there is a little more lycra here).

I also thought it might be nice to show you some images of my process....

I start with a rough sketch to figure out the composition and block in some tones.

I then create my linework drawing in pencil.

After transferring the linework to a clean sheet of paper, I ink in all my blacks using finetipped pens and black inks with a paintbrush.

Finally, I scan the artwork. Then clean up and colour in Photoshop. For this image, I scanned a piece of brown cardboard to give a subtle texture to the background.

Genna Campton for Spook

Future Living is a magazine about the newest trends and ideas on living and working in Australia and around the world. For the latest issue I was asked to create three collaged illustrations to accompany an article called 'The Briechangers', about a new trend emerging, where people are returning to the city lifestyle after an earlier 'treechange.' It was lots of fun to play around with collage.

This is my entry for the 14th annual 9x5 exhibition run by Illustrators Australia.

All entrants are given a 9x5' piece of plywood to create a (hopefully) delightful illustration upon. The theme this year is '20' to celebrate Illustrators Australia's 20th birthday. My entry is a redesign of the Aussie $20 note. With a portrait of the wonderful Aussie artist and illustrator Norman Lindsay.
This year the exhibition will be run as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Opening night is Friday 9th October 6pm. The venue is Space 39, Level 2, 39 Little Collins Street, Melbourne Vic. The gallery will also be open Saturday the 10th oct 10am - 4pm.
